Tips

Scheduling visits
  • To visit more than one state in a day, you will have to know some geography and plan your campaign stops carefully.
  • Consult your map often if you're not that sure of the distances between two campaign stops.
  • Schedule more than one visit to states where the electoral votes are too close to call. (Consult your map.)
  • Don't neglect your party base.   Visit states that strongly support your candidacy.   These are the people who give money to your campaign.
  • It is probably not a good idea to schedule your entire campaign at one time.   See how the campaign progresses and react accordingly.

Buying advertising
  • Advertising is nonrefundable.   Always purchase carefully.   If you are a beginning player, we recommend you buy a few days at a time.
  • Buy advertising in states where the electoral votes are too close to call or where you are only slightly behind. (Consult your map and the references.)
  • Don't spend too much of your advertising budget in states where your opponent has a commanding lead.
  • Direct mail advertising is expensive but it generates cash contributions.

Financing your campaign
  • It's a good idea to look at the balance in your checkbook before you purchase advertising.
  • The longer it takes you to pay back a loan, the more money you pay in interest to the bank.

Taking a stand
  • Republicans often fight to win the support of the conservative or right wing of a party.
  • Democrats often fight to win the support of the liberal or left wing of the party.
  • Visit states where your stand matches the people in that state.
  • Purchase advertising in states where your stand matches the people in that state

Hiring a campaign team
  • You could do all the work yourself, but the proper people on your team can help
  • Hiring people costs money.   Firing people costs money, too.   Get it right the first time.
  • The right person in a job will help you.   The wrong person is a job is worse than no person in that job.
