Popular Vote* This chart graphs the popular vote for each party. The blue bars indicate what percentage of the popular vote the Democratic party won, the red bars indicate what percentage of the popular vote the Republicans won. The yellow bars indicate what percentage of the popular vote went to Independent parties. The column under Dem and Rep gives the number of electoral votes for each state.
For each state the table shows the number of electoral votes cast for the Democrats and then a blue bar shows the proportion of popular votes cast in that state for the Democrats. A red bar shows the proportion of popular votes cast for the Republicans in that state, and the right most column shows the number of electoral votes cast for the Republicans. The yellow bar between the blue and red bars shows the portion of popular votes cast for an independent candidate. You can sort the table in any of five sequences. Select the year 2000 election and sort by spread. Note state 19 Florida. The Democrats received a higher proportion of the electoral votes in Florida than in three other states, but a smaller (immeasurable really) portion of independent votes were cast in Florida than in those three other states.
*Please be patient for this chart to come up. It takes the computer a while to calculate and then to paint the results.
